Scarning And The Community

Scarning Primary -  A –  School for the Community

The school recognises the important part it can play in the local community. As well as serving the children in its care Scarning primary strives to be a hub for a wide range of community events. Often these are organised and driven by the school although we do offer a range of facilities for community use.

The community in the school

Here is a ‘snapshot’ of some of the opportunities the school has planned to bring the community into the school. As they reflect the changing moods of the year, once so necessary to the life of a traditional Victorian school, I give them in ‘seasonal’ order!

September ‘Community Coffee Morning’ in aid of Macmillan Nurses.

Mrs Waterfield’s Year 5 class ran this years event. This year they decided it should be run on a Saturday morning so that it could have more of a community impact. The morning raised £461.00! Events such as this help the children learn key skills in serving the community and also shows the school in a very caring, hospitable light.

October Harvest Celebrations Week culminating in ‘Apple Day’.

Donations from children and families are given to the local Salvation Army in a Harvest Thanksgiving assembly which also includes a scarecrow competition. The main focus of the week is the ever popular Apple Day organised by the Year 4 children. This is a wonderful opportunity for cross curricular studies as the children have to organise, cost, produce, advertise and sell their wares.

November Fundraiser Firework Spectacular

This year’s spectacular takes place on Friday November 4th. A large bonfire is lit to start off the proceedings and is a very convenient way for members of the community to dispose of unwanted wooden items.  People come from as far away as Norwich to be entertained (and fed!) with not one but two firework displays. An early ‘low noise’ display for the younger, more sensitive viewers will be trialled this year after feedback from our customers!

December Christmas Fayre

Our children are encouraged to show their enterprising natures and competing with the adults by hiring a table top to sell their unwanted stuff. Stalls, raffles and Santa’s Grotto make for a lively afternoon as we move towards the Christmas holiday.

December Nativity

This is Foundation Stage and KS1’s opportunity to perform for their mums, dads and wider families. So popular we put it on twice!! This year the Reverend Thornley will be in attendance.

December Performance – Drama Group

One of the many successful clubs that are run from the school is the Drama Club. It contains 40 members from Yr3 – Yr 6 and will be entertaining parents and locals with a Christmas Musical this year.

School Sports Days

Both key stages hold Sports Afternoons in June which also includes an adult race at the end! Get practicing!

Scarning village hall Coffee Morning

As the summer term draws to a close the children of year 4 hire the Scarning Village Hall to run a coffee morning.

Summer Fete

The Summer Fete takes place on a Saturday and is always good fun. Soaking teachers with wet sponges always seems to go down well. I can’t think why?

Hands across the ocean

Staff and pupils have made several visits to our partner school in Italy. This has enabled some of our Year 5 and 6 children to experience being taught in Italian classes.  7 teachers and 8 teaching assistants have experience of teaching in Europe. The ultimate accolade of our work with our European friends has been gaining International School Status. This year the School is writing to children in Gambia, and we are building up strong links with a School there.
