The Fete
March 2010
Years 1 and 2 worked really hard over two weeks to create games and to organise a fete for everyone to enjoy.
The children spent their maths lesson practicing addition and subtraction strategies, money totals and giving change. The literacy lessons focused on reading and following and writing instructions to make squash, jelly and their fete games.

There was so much enjoyment – most of the children didn’t realise that they were learning and applying their numerical skills!

A fun day was had by all – loads of speaking and listening, turn taking, playing games, giving change, being the responsible stall holder and having fun!

The children raised £32.22 and were so pleased with themselves when they were the bankers and creating piles of coins.
The money was put towards the Haiti fund to help children that have no clean water, home or family.
Reflecting upon the work and learning that went into the fete, next time we want to improve on our change calculations and maybe invite the whole school!

A Party For Grandma Mainland
Jan – Feb 2010
The children in years 1 and 2 had a challenge to help prepare a party for Grandma Mainland. They already knew a lot about this character from their learning in Literacy and Geography.
They explored symmetry and all felt confident about it.

Grandma Mainland was going to be 56! The children explored different addition and subtraction number sentances to make 5, 6, 50 and 56.
They made ‘fancy’ gifts: necklaces (which involved number bonds
to 20 and threading) and bangles (measuring and making salt dough).
The children then used their wrapping paper to problem solve and make fancy gift bags and boxes big enough for their gifts.
The children had fun making symmetrical mirror dances and decorating biscuits with a theme – you guessed it – ‘symmetry’!

The children also made table decorations out of salt dough – working on our measurements, shapes and fine motor skills.
The class made masks and crowns with lots of 2D shapes and we tried to practice our ruler skills We made cocktail drinks with apple, cranberry and lemonade, learning how to use measuring cylinders accurately!
