We’re going on a bear hunt!

Years 1 and 2 Natural environments and objects

The children in years 1 and 2 were asked to explore the “natural environment” around them and the “natural objects and colours” within them. We explored some of the settings in the classic story “we’re going on a bear hunt” by Michael Rosen. Throughout the six weeks the children produced a selection of art work, explored various techniques, media and colour. They also built a word wall describing the different environments and used this in their story writing.

Our School grounds

Green, mesh, twisted, woven, colourful, patterns, messy, spongy, spiky…

Lots of natural things to explore!

Grass!

Uh-Uh! Grass! long, wavy grass!

Swishy! Spiky! Swishy! Swashy!

We explored lots of different types of grasses in the thistle field.  The children described the different grasses as… curly, twisty, straight like needles, a nest, messy, spongy, stiff, wavy and spikey!

Grass collages

The children worked as two teams to create grass collages. They used the trimmer to created blades of grass. The children noticed if they cut the paper in a really thin strip it made the paper curly, creating a spiral.

A natural environment!

We looked at a famous painting… WHEAT FIELDS WITH CROWS by VincentVan Gogh. A school in a rural, farming locality, we have all experienced a glowing yellow wheat field! SWISHY SWISHY!

Colour mixing

Year one used paint, pencils and their fingers to copy the paintings. We really got stuck in exploring colours, textures and shades.

A masterpiece!

Print making..

The year two’s used mini copies of the wheat fields with crows picture and pierced holes through the pictures into polystyrene tiles to make a printing block. They then painted on the appropriate colours and created a mono print.

We were very proud!

Uh-Uh! Mud! Thick oozy Mud.

There is a lot of mud in Scarning. The mud was… yucky!, dusty!, oozy!, dry!, hard!, soft!. Some looked like moon dust and had flecks of silver. Some looked like chocolate, a really oozy brown. We found the further you dug down the darker and wetter the mud got!

More mud!

Footprints in the mud Digging for gold Oops! So much fun!

Exploring more art.

We looked at paintings by Jackson Pollock (including “FULL FATHOM FIVE”).We thought that they looked like patterned splashes in mud.
Muddy splats and patterns!

Big splats and what a mess!

Lots of laughter, celebrations and mess with mud balloon bombs!

Uh-Uh! A river! A deep cold river.

Words!

Ripple, rapids, waves, pebbles, shallow, deep weed, green, blue, reflection, sparkle, light, glitter.

Water lilies (The clouds)

We looked at a very famous paining by Claude Monet and discussed the colours and shades within the picture. Some children could not believe that it was a painting : “It looks so real”.

Water – ripples.

The year one children used tissue paper to create a shiny ripple effect.

Water – smudges

The year two children used chalks to replicate the famous Claude Monet painting “Scarning style!”

What wonderful work! We didn’t find any bears though!!
