Show Me, Show Me

Spring 2010

Year 1 and 2 – Mathematical Contextual Learning

The children in years 1 and 2 have worked really hard this term and wanted to show their families their achievements. Anytime we completed something there was always the conversation: “Can I take it home to show my mum..?”

So we planned a three week maths unit where the final event was to hold two open mornings where the children could show off their learning and school.

The year 1 and 2 children designed a questionnaire to ask parents/carers what nibbles and drinks they would like. Collecting the data, we then represented this as block charts, tally charts and pictograms. It was very evident which refreshments were the favourites!

Within our preperations we created maps of the school and measured distances between rooms and presented these on our maps.

We practiced our directional and positional language playing various games like Twister, Pin The Tail On The Donkey and Bee-Bot controller.

The children explored time and calculated how long it takes to walk between different rooms and created a programme with timings for the show-me morning.

Then we practiced addition by counting on and using known facts. We also practised giving change.

We made repeated patterned buntings of 4m long and posters informing people of the cost of the refreshments.

Finally! We spent a whole morning being chefs! Weighing, doubling quantities, setting the timer on the microwave and cooking the required nibbles.

Lots to make. Super Chefs!! We even did the washing up!

Show-me, Show me!

We started off with the whole school singing. Then we moved on to show our mums. dads, grandparents and siblings our work. We used our maps to guide our family members around the school. We showed them activities on the computers.

We had a lot of support.

Lots to do.

We played Mathletics and Bee-Bots in the ICT suite. We then had the chance to play different maths games like snakes and ladders, dominoes, cross out and doubles and programmed the Bee-Bots.

Then…

It was time for our refreshments! What a delight!! “Yummy, delicious. Could I have the recipe?”

The refreshments were very popular. The children served the guests. We had some cakes left over – but they were soon munched by the children!

A fun morning was had by all!

“It has changed so much since I was at school… I like how you make the learning tailored to the child’s interest – like Ben 10″. (Nanny G)

“The children are so proud, it is great to see them so confident”. (Mrs H)

A big thank you!

The children loved planning, preparing and then showing off their learning and work.

We are very proud of our year 1 and 2 children. They pulled out all the stops to make this event a real success!

The year 1 and 2 team would like to say a big thank you to all our parents, grandparents and supported the two “Show-Me” mornings.

THANK YOU
